Outside the Box – Christy Johnson
Renascence School International students participated in a Post-Halloween Candy Exchange to make donations to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization that supports soldiers and their families. The children exchanged one pound of Halloween candy and/or five hygiene items for one raffle ticket that they could use for a prize at the school’s “store”. The school rocketed past its original goal of collecting 40 pounds of candy with a total collection of 142 pounds!
In addition to the students receiving raffle tickets for their donation, the school will have a pizza party. C6 and C7 students also received one hour of community service hours. This was a fun and fantastic way for our children to give back to the community and to show their appreciation and support to our American Heroes.
Operation Gratitude annually sends 100,000 care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items, and personal letters of appreciation, to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed in hostile regions, to their children left behind, and to Wounded Warriors, Veterans and First Responders. (www.operationgratitude.com) Special thanks to the Social Committee who graciously volunteered their time to weigh, sort, and package all the candy for our troops.
